| Jury awards $9.5M to Magnuson family
CLAYTON, Mo. - A St. Louis County jury on Friday awarded US$9.5 million in a wrongful-death lawsuit involving former NHL player Rob Ramage, whose drunk-driving accident in Ontario in 2003 resulted in the death of former Chicago Blackhawks star Keith Magnuson. Magnuson's wife and two children filed the suit against Ramage and National Car Rentals of Canada. The jury deliberated about two hours. Magnuson, 56, was a passenger in the rental car driven by Ramage on Dec. 15, 2003. The car was involved in a head-on collision in suburban Toronto as the men were returning from a funeral. Magnuson died at the scene. Ramage, 48, has been convicted in an Ontario court on five charges, including impaired driving causing death. He is scheduled to be sentenced Jan.
Incredibly cool car rentals
America might have invented “car culture," but there's a strong case to be made for lusting after European luxury. And while possession may seem the obvious goal, the duration of that possession is always relative. So ask yourself which is better: owning a Maserati you can never drive? Or driving a Maserati you could never own? More and more car aficionados are exercising the latter option, through rental agencies that specialize in luxury auto and high-end driving clubs. Across the country and abroad, fleets of the newest, sweetest rides—Ferraris, Aston Martins, Audis, Lamborghinis—are available for all, at a price—without the hassles of garaging, maintenance and repair. Exotic car rentals are often the first step, followed by car clubs. In these automotive versions of the members-only country club, well-heeled car enthusiasts pony up initial membership payment, and then annual dues—in exchange for the keys to a cadre of top-end vehicles.
Baxter County Quroum Court hears updates on airport, library
Airport officials have taken steps to ensure income can cover expenses at the airport, Baxter County Judge Dan Hall told the Baxter County Quorum Court during its meeting Tuesday. The Ozark Regional Airport Commission previously had learned that income was not enough to meet expenses, so the commission took steps and raised airport hangar rental fees and other fees, he said. .

Zipcar gets 400 members in first year
In one year, the UF Zipcar program has amassed over 400 members and has the capacity to take on at least 300 more.Started as part of a fleet management initiative developed by UF President Bernie Machen, its aim is to keep people from bringing cars on campus by offering hourly rental cars to UF faculty, staff and students. The program, which began in January 2007, has a fleet of eight vehicles in four campus locations: Keene-Flint Hall, Inner Road at Southwest 13th Street, across from the Reitz Union and near Shands at UF. .
JOHNSON: 'Just move on' won't work for offended CU students
We want the university to do its job. They will tell us to just move on, but I'm not accepting that anymore. To do that will only mean it can happen again. "Where is the zero-tolerance?" Chris Choe said, spitting that he must wage this fight in the middle of studying for midterms. "He singled us out as targets," he repeated, wondering whether such solicitation on the already racially charged campus qualifies somehow as a crime. "We are going to go to the administration seeking very specific guarantees, clear action and effort. This will not be like every other time," he said, "when months down the road, you talk to your buddy and say, 'Remember that?' "We are going to stay with this." Way past time to do so. johnsonw@RockyMountainNews.com or 303-954-2763.
SNP 'not fit to govern'
Here he seems to have missed a rather basic point. The SNP are proposing a tax cut. They have made that point clear, describing it as the largest tax cut in a generation.Mr. Midwinter says that moving from the council tax to the local income tax will raise £831 million less in tax than at present. That is half true. £450 million less will be raised. Put another way (and one I suspect that will ring more true to taxpayers) that means £450 million will be returned to Scottish taxpayers. That is a central feature of the SNP plans. This leaves £381 million in dispute. This £381 million is the amount of the current council tax rebate. Mr. Midwinter assumes that this money would be lost to Scotland in the maw of the Treasury. What we know from the Burt Review is that arrangements are flexible enough to deal with their proposed alternative to Council Tax.
Reviving the Taurus is bull
I don't know what I find more silly. The fact that Ford has brought back the Taurus name or the fact that my colleague David Kiley—who does consider him a tastemaster of all things marketing—thinks it's a great idea and that he deserves a whiff of credit for the decision. In any case, it's one of the dumber ideas I've seen in a while. Ford is taking a name that they killed with a decade of bad design and terrible sales and marketing strategies and putting it on a car that has gone unloved since its launch. Sounds like Ford will flush millions in marketing and ad dollars down the tube with this one. True, the Taurus was once the best-selling car in America in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Then Honda beat it with the Accord and Toyota eclipsed both with the Camry.
