Clintons' InfoUSA Ties Scrutinized
Last year, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton took the unusual step of renting out some of her lists. The transaction once again highlights the Clintons' connections to a businessman who now faces questions from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Reports from Clinton's campaign show that on Dec. 3, it collected payment for renting out three mailing lists, the sale of which netted them $8,225. It was an unusual transaction, according to Roger Craver, a liberal guru of the political direct-mail industry. "As a general rule, a campaign will not let its donor list out into the markets until the campaign is over," he said. "This is the mother's milk of small-gift fundraising, and they use these lists frequently." There are no records that any other presidential candidates rented out mailing lists last year.
Van Halen show at First Mariner Arena postponed
Upcoming shows in Dallas, Cincinnati and Raleigh, N.C., have also been rescheduled. A news release issued Monday from promoter Live Nation Inc. (NYSE:LYV) cited guitarist Eddie Van Halen's undisclosed medical conditions as the reason for the postponement. Eddie Van Halen "is undergoing a battery of comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis and recommended medical procedures," the statement read. Guitar virtuoso Eddie Van Halen and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, reunited with original lead singer David Lee Roth for a tour that kicked off in September. Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang, is rounding out the lineup on bass, replacing original member Michael Anthony. Landing the gig is the latest coup for the downtown arena's management, Philadelphia-based SMG, which since 2005 has brought the Rolling Stones, Guns N' Roses, the Miss USA pageant and Christina Aguilera to the 45-year-old facility, which holds 12,000 people.
Switching Majors and Values in Ecuador
We also learned about the local fishermen's struggle to both conserve natural resources and make ends meet. I ended the program with an independent-study program based in an indigenous village in the Amazon. Here, I did policy work for a future World Bank sanitation project for rural villages. The only sanitation systems these people were educated about were water systems that had been shown to fail in that exact village, so I faced a challenge. I was there to build a model of an ecological dry toilet, so that nonconventional systems that do not pollute the water could actually be a choice in choosing a sanitation system. My stay in the village made me question many of the values and cultural norms prevalent in the United States. In the village, I lived with a family of 11 brothers and sisters in a place with no bathrooms and electricity only on rare occasions.
Obama & Clinton: Who's More Likely to Confront Global Warming?
Even if you ignore his major achievements in the Illinois legislature--like bringing police chiefs and civil liberties advocates together to craft and support a bill providing clear monitoring of police interrogations, and passing a bill extending health care to 150,000 state residents--I'd say evidence of insider ability is a wash. The critical difference between Obama and Clinton is their potential to encourage ordinary citizens to speak out on the changes that we need. And that will be essential. If you strip away the racial connotations, that's actually the core of the debate over Clinton's claim that LBJ was more critical to the passage of the Civil Rights Act than Martin Luther King. For all that I loathe Johnson's escalation of the Vietnam War, he did stake his entire political capital and massive skill to navigate the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts through Congress--even though he knew it would lose the Democrats the South for a long time to come. But without the massive citizen movement that put civil rights onto the nation's conscience and at the top of its political agenda, he'd never have taken these stands.
VoIP review: SunRocket
I went with Sunrocket because I thought with less subs I might get better service and quality. I am reconsidering this position. Vonage is heavily venture capital backed. To the tune of $600M in investment in the last 24+ months. They are building and investing heavily in state of the art technology and candidly there is value in that. Maybe 24.99/month and voice quality you can count on is better than $17 for a teenager second line quality like service. I dont know yet. I'm going to wait and see if Sunrocket gets their service working more smoothly. If they do I'll stay. If however this comes with massive price increases...i'm not so sure. For instance Comcast is now offering a similar service that is VoIP only to the CO then is traditional POTs and gives 8hr stand by power in event of power outage for about same price as Vonage.
